ReplicaMD

A local-first Markdown workspace with Notion-style polish and Obsidian-style linking.

Overview

ReplicaMD came out of one rule I set myself: my notes should be plain files on my own disk, and I should be able to walk away whenever I want. Everything is ordinary Markdown in folders you choose, with the config kept in a local folder next to it.

On top of that is a proper editor built on CodeMirror 6. Wikilinks with aliases and embeds, backlinks, full-text search, a graph view with no external dependencies, a command palette, a quick switcher with search operators, outlines, breadcrumbs, tags. Tabs and split panes stick around per vault.

Later on I added YAML frontmatter properties you can edit inline, saved table views with filtering and sorting, a canvas format, and a Live Preview mode where the Markdown syntax hides itself until your cursor lands on it. AI and dictation are optional and bring-your-own-key, and local models work too.

One TypeScript codebase builds both the Electron desktop app and an Android build through Capacitor. It's held together by 879 Vitest tests across 73 files, Playwright end-to-end tests, type checking and linting. MIT licensed.

What it does
  • Plain files, always

Notes are .md files in folders you choose. No proprietary database, no cloud requirement, no lock-in.

  • Linking and graph

Wikilinks with aliases and embeds, backlinks, and a graph view built without external dependencies.

  • Live Preview

Markdown markers stay hidden until the cursor reaches them, so editing reads like a document.

  • Properties and tables

YAML frontmatter parsed into editable properties, plus saved table views with filtering and sorting.

  • Canvas

A dedicated canvas document format with text nodes, note cards, edges and zoom controls.

  • Optional, local-friendly AI

Bring your own OpenAI or Anthropic key, or point it at a local model. Entirely opt-in.
